The physiotherapists at Physio.co.uk use hydrotherapy to treat a variety of symptoms and conditions including: :
Chronic Pain - Hydrotherapy is a recommended course of treatment for patients with any type of chronic pain condition. Hydrotherapy reduces pain by promoting normal movement, increasing muscle length, and increasing muscle strength and control. Conditions that may benefit include fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome, and longstanding musculoskeletal conditions.
Neurological - People with neurological conditions are often able to perform activities in the pool that they are unable to perform on dry land. Hydrotherapy is also used as a way to reduce muscle spasm in patients with severe traumatic brain injury, and increase strength in many neurological conditions.
Cardiovascular / Pulmonary Conditions – Hydrotherapy can be used to enhance muscular and cardiopulmonary endurance in the elderly, or for rehabilitation following cases chronic heart failure, or an exacerbation of respiratory disease.
Musculoskeletal Injuries – Whether sport related or age related, hydrotherapy can help improve function following a musculoskeletal injury. Common conditions treated include: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, ankle sprains, supraspinatus muscle tears, and low back pain.
Post Surgery - Hydrotherapy is used to quicken the recovery of patients following back, abdominal or lower limb surgery that causes them difficulty mobilising and/or unable to weight-bear fully. Hydrotherapy helps by increasing joint movement and increasing muscle strength. Examples of surgeries hydrotherapy can be beneficial following include: anterior cruciate ligament surgery, reduction and internal fixation of a Colles' fracture, and total replacement of a lower limb joint.
Paediatric - Hydrotherapy is a common treatment used to treat children with neurological and orthopaedic conditions, or following surgery. Conditions that may benefit from hydrotherapy include: Rett syndrome, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, infantile spinal muscular atrophy, and following surgery.
If you think hydrotherapy sessions may be beneficial for the treatment of a condition that you or someone you know has, then please contact Physio.co.uk for more information or to make an appointmentwith one of our experienced Physiotherapists, by calling us on 0330 088 7800.
