Serial casting is a treatment technique used by neurological physiotherapists in order to provide a stretch for muscles that are tight due to neurological impairment. Serial casting is appropriate for anyone who has tight stiff muscles that are reducing your ability to carry out day to day activities and your quality of life. Tightness in the muscles is often caused by conditions affecting the nervous system such as: Serial casting is commonly used in conjunction with botox injections. Firstly, botox injections paralyse the muscles and stop them contracting and getting tighter. Then a cast can be made to hold the limb in a position of stretch to help to maintain the new, greater range of movement. Further casts are made over time in order to increase the angle of stretch. The aim of serial casting is an increased range of movement and improved quality of life.
