What is the Functional Movement Assessment (FMA)?
The FMA is series of specific body movements e.g. squat, that we analyse to give us information on your biomechanical movement. These specific movements highlight abnormalities or asymmetries that often lead to injury. These movements have been developed through the experience of our physiotherapists working with elite level athletes in pre-season testing, to help highlight any possible causes to future/current injury.
Why is this necessary? And how is it appropriate to running?
An FMA is necessary because running is an athletic movement that not only includes lower limb dynamic movement but also spine and upper limb movement to allow us to move efficiently. The FMA shows us whether each joint can move in harmony with the body to have the most effective injury-free athletic output, whether this is football, golf or running.
